Sanctuary of the Precious Blood of Christ - Ludbreg
Ludbreg houses a unique Eucharistic shrine in Croatia, founded by the Bull of the Holy Father – Pope Leon X in 1513. This bull officially confirmed the miraculous appearance of the Holy Blood of Jesus, which took place in 1411 in the chapel of the medieval Ludbreg castle Batthyany.
That year, the priest, while serving the mass in the castle chapel, doubted the words of turning bread and wine into the true body and blood of Christ. According to the pope’s bulla, the priest confessed openly what had happened only on the deathbed and has since been recognized as a Wonder Relic.
The court chapel of St. Cross in which the miraculous event takes place is painted with motifs depicting the Miraculous conversion of the Holy Blood of Jesus during Holy Mass.
Today, the chalice of the blood of Jesus is kept in a beautiful baroque display in the parish church of the Holy Trinity in Ludbreg. The baroque display that holds the relic of the Precious Blood of Christ is a gift from the Countess Eleonora Batthyany Strattman from 1721. Since Pope’s confession in Ludbreg, for centuries a lot of believers make pilgrimages, some of whom have testified about the miraculous healings of a holy relic.
